The International Association of Young Lawyers holds its 50th congress in Barcelona

Some 600 lawyers under 45 gathered in Barcelona to discuss the new challenges facing the legal world in the context of the economic climate

The International Association of Young Lawyers (“AIJA”) holds its 50th annual congress in Barcelona, to mark a half century of activity. Approximately 600 lawyers under 45—considered young lawyers—have gathered in Barcelona to attend the event organized by this highly regarded international association. The association, comprising more than 3,000 lawyers from over 80 countries, is the only world organization exclusively for young lawyers. It holds its annual congress in a different country each year in August, although this is the third time it has chosen Barcelona.

The association’s 21 commissions covering the main law areas will hold workshops and work sessions, focusing on the upcoming challenges in the legal world, particularly emphasizing issues that have surfaced during the financial crisis, such as developments in employment and tax regulation, and promoting the mobility of lawyers between countries and jurisdictions. Sports law will have a special presence at the workshops, given the closing of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Barcelona’s Olympic inheritance. The congress will focus not only on professional issues, but also includes social events for the 600 lawyers, who can enjoy visits to the city’s landmark sights, participate in networking activities, and even enjoy home-cooked meals at the homes of local lawyers.

The Barcelona Bar Association and lawyers from the law firms Cuatrecasas, Abdon Pedrajas & Molero, Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira, De Pasqual & Marzo, Lawants, Mara Torralba, MMMM, Bufete Plana, Ecija Abogados and Roca Junyent were behind this international congress.
