Álvaro Ordóñez is a partner at ECIJA Ecuador, specialised in commercial, sustainability and the environment.
He has been the national undersecretary for mining contracts and was part of the team that negotiated Ecuador’s first large-scale mining contract. He is the co-author of secondary regulations and the reform of the Ecuadorian Mining Act (Ley de Minería) and has supported the Chamber of Mining of Ecuador, of which he was director in 2016-18.
Currently, he offers legal advice to companies and institutions, particularly in energy and the extractive industry, in real estate, public procurement, disputes and arbitration, compliance, constitutional, financial and environmental matters. He has experience in obtaining environmental permits and water rights.
Álvaro participated in the strategy for defending mining company rights at the Constitutional Court of Ecuador.
During the pandemic, he participated in and locally led the financing of one of the largest mining projects in the world with mining royalties.
Álvaro holds an LLM in Law from Catholic University of Quito and an MA in Environmental Law and Policy and Natural Resources (LL.M.), specialising in energy law, mining and sustainable development, from the University of Denver, USA.
Álvaro speaks Spanish and English.
