The Main Points of Donald Trump’s Foreign Policy

By Ricardo Olvera

Donald Trump’s inauguration speech marked the beginning of a new political era in the United States, with forceful proposals that reflect a significant shift in the country’s public policies. The following highlights the main points announced by the president in his inaugural address:

Immigration Policy

President Trump announced a tightening of immigration policies, including the detention and deportation of illegal immigrants to their countries of origin. He also highlighted the reinstatement of the “Stay in Mexico” policy and the elimination of the practice known as “Catch & Release.” To reinforce these measures, federal troops will be deployed at the border to contain the irregular entry of undocumented immigrants. In addition, drug and human trafficking cartels will be designated as terrorist organizations.

Economy and energy

Trump proposed the creation of a task force composed of federal officials and government agencies to control inflation. In addition, he declared a state of emergency in energy matters, announcing the massive reactivation of oil and gas exploration, drilling and production, with the aim of turning the United States into a leading energy exporter. In this sense, the Green New Deal and the policy promoting the transition to electric vehicles will be ended.

Social and cultural policies

In his speech, Trump emphasized that his administration will only recognize two genders: male and female. He will also push to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” and will relaunch space policy with the ambition to send astronauts to Mars.

Among the measures highlighted, the president assured that the sovereignty of the Panama Canal will be recovered for the United States. He will also firmly implement the law-and-order policy throughout the national territory. In the fiscal area, he confirmed the creation of a Revenue Agency for foreign entities (External Revenue Service).

The speech did not include specific mentions on the imposition of tariffs on other countries, which allowed the peso-dollar exchange rate to remain practically unchanged.

At ECIJA Mexico, we analyze these situations to offer legal perspectives on their impact on international law.
