ECIJA appoints Rafael Piqueras to strengthen its Competition Law practice
As part of its ambitious growth plan, ECIJA strengthens its Competition Law department with the appointment of Rafael Piqueras as a new partner in its Madrid office.
The new ECIJA partner has extensive international experience in Competition and EU Law, having advised companies across multiple sectors on merger control, foreign investments, anticompetitive practices, cartels, distribution agreements, abuse of dominant position, State aid, litigation, and damage claims, as well as on the design and implementation of competition compliance programs.
With more than 18 years of experience, Rafael has been involved in highly significant competition cases and transactions at both national and international levels, working in multijurisdictional teams and advising clients in numerous sectors, including regulated industries such as technology, energy, food, and pharmaceuticals.
Before joining ECIJA, Rafael built his career at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where he worked for 12 years in the Antitrust, Competition and Trade practice, and at Deloitte Legal, where he led the Competition and EU Law practice in Spain.
He holds a Law degree from Universidad Pontificia Comillas ICAI-ICADE, a Master’s degree in Business Legal Advisory from IE Law School, and a specialization in EU Competition Law from King’s College London. Rafael has also pursued his academic vocation by teaching at prestigious universities and postgraduate programs.
Additionally, he actively participates in the specialized legal community as a Board Member of the Spanish Association for the Defense of Competition (AEDC) and, since 2022, has served as a Non-Governmental Advisor (NGA) to the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC) in the International Competition Network (ICN).

With this addition, ECIJA now has more than 220 partners and over 1,400 professionals in its global structure, further strengthening its Competition Law practice in Spain.
