ECIJA strengthens its Intellectual Property Area with the addition of Miguel Ángel Margáin

The new partner, Miguel Ángel Margáin, will head the Intellectual Property Area at ECIJA Mexico, a firm that currently boasts a total of 9 partners in the country.

ECIJA continues its growth strategy in Mexico and has announced a new corporate move in its Mexico City office with the incorporation of Miguel Ángel Margáin as a new partner. The latest addition to the Ibero-American firm, which has the largest presence in Latin America, strengthens its Intellectual Property practice, which will now be led by Margáin.

The new partner brings over 30 years of experience in intellectual property and innovation protection and exploitation at national and international levels. He also possesses outstanding specialization in the technology and entertainment (TMT) sector, both in the private and public sectors. Margáin has been recognized as one of the best intellectual property lawyers in the Latin American region and as one of the most influential professionals in Latin America and the Pacific Rim. He is featured in the Latin Lawyer 250 guide as most influential lawyers in Latin America.

In the private sector, Margáin served as president (2009-2012) of the Mexican Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AMPPI). He was also vice-president and spokesperson of the Intellectual Property Rights Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce of Mexico (AmCham). Additionally, he is an active member of the International Trademark Association (INTA) and the Inter-American Association of Trademarks (ASIPI).

In the public sector, Margáin held the position as General Manager of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) from January 2013 to November 2018. During his tenure, he served as chairman of the APEC Expert Group on Intellectual Property Rights, chaired the Madrid Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and participated in the negotiation rounds of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States, and Canada, known as USMCA. Notable achievements during his term include the significant reform of the trademark system, the complete digital transformation of the IMPI, and the comprehensive project for the new legislation of patents and trademarks in Mexico, aligned with the USMAC.

Ricardo Chacón, managing partner of ECIJA Mexico and member of the International Committee of ECIJA, expressed his satisfaction with Margáin’s incorporation: “With the addition of Mike, we are taking a firm step towards consolidating our TMT and Intellectual Property practice. ECIJA is a global reference in this field, and in Mexico, we continue growing in the same direction. We strive to add talented professionals who not only have a high profile and outstanding track record but also resonate with the values and work culture of our firm. We are delighted to announce Mike’s arrival, which comes at a time when ECIJA is solidifying its global position through the incorporations and international alliances we have recently announced.”

Joaquín Rodríguez, founding partner and member of the Executive Committee of ECIJA Mexico, emphasized the significance of Margáin’s appointment for the Intellectual Property and TMT area: “Mike Margáin is a crucial addition to our team, and we anticipate strengthening our Intellectual Property and TMT practice in alignment with ECIJA’s international and local growth strategy.”

Mike Margáin, the new partner of ECIJA Mexico, expresses, “It is a privilege to be a part of one of the top firms in my areas of expertise, both domestically and internationally. I aim to contribute the required tools and experience to foster further growth and establish ECIJA as a global reference, as well as a leader in our country.”

ECIJA Mexico’s Intellectual Property practice stands out for its innovation and creativity in protecting, preserving, and exploiting Intellectual Property rights. The Legal 500 international ranking highlights: “The practice is distinguished by the quality of service, proactive and agile response times.” “Personalized attention, deep knowledge of intellectual property issues, and a quick and timely response are attributes that differentiate them from other firms, along with their determination to find solutions for their clients’ needs.”

The announcement of Miguel Angel Margáin’s addition comes after ECIJA Mexico’s previous announcements in March and February regarding the launch of a new financial advisory business line and the establishment of an Environmental and Sustainability practice. Additionally, this year the firm announced an international alliance with Taylor Wessing, Anglo-German firm, leader in TMT and Intellectual Property in Europe. These strategic moves are integral to ECIJA’s expansion and consolidation plan as a full-service firm in Mexico and a leader in Latin America (LATAM).
