International Day for the Eradication of Violence against Women

The International Day for the Eradication of Violence against Women, celebrated every November 25, seeks to raise awareness of the various forms of violence faced by women and girls around the world, promoting effective actions to prevent it, protect the victims and punish the perpetrators.

At the international level, instruments such as the CEDAW and the Convention of Belém do Pará oblige States to adopt measures to eliminate gender-based violence. In Mexico, the General Law on Women’s Access to a Life Free of Violence defines modalities of violence and mechanisms such as Gender Violence Alerts. In addition, regulations such as the Federal Criminal Code and NOM-046-SSA2-2005 reinforce the protection of victims and punish crimes such as femicide and domestic violence.

Despite these advances, gender violence continues to be critical in Mexico. The Gender Violence Alerts, a mechanism for which the National Human Rights Commission is responsible, have made the problem visible, although they face limitations in their implementation due to the fact that in more than two thirds of the cases, the alert is not followed up, for example. However, initiatives such as specialized justice units and educational programs are transforming the culture towards greater equity.

At ECIJA Mexico, we support companies and organizations in the design of prevention policies and regulatory compliance in gender equality. We reaffirm our commitment on this International Day to advance towards a safer and more equitable future for all.
