Nicole Villaseñor participates in the workshop “What is Human Rights Economics and why is it important?”

On February 28, 2025, Nicole Villaseñor, an associate in the environmental practice at ECIJA Mexico, participated as a panelist in the virtual workshop “What is Human Rights Economics and why is it important?”, an event organized by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and designed to foster structured dialogue among key stakeholders on the application of Human Rights Economics (HRE).

During the workshop, participants analyzed priorities and potential strategic points for implementing this approach in different thematic areas. The possibility of future collaborations and strategies to strengthen the integration of economic, social, cultural, and environmental rights (“ESCER”) into economic and social policies was also explored.

One of the event’s key moments was the roundtable discussion entitled “Integrating Human Rights into Economic Policies: Challenges and Opportunities.” In this session, the panelists discussed key points for improving the implementation of ESCER rights within the current economic framework.

In her presentation, Nicole highlighted the importance of linking the Human Rights Economy with national and international regulatory frameworks, as well as the role of businesses, organizations, and the government sector in promoting strategies aligned with the principles of sustainability, social justice, and the right to a healthy environment.

Finally, the event concluded with a reflection session on the challenges and opportunities to strengthen the adoption of these principles in economic decisions. Emphasis was placed on the need to continue promoting spaces for dialogue and intersectoral cooperation to advance the human rights and sustainable economy agenda.
