ECIJA launches International Taxation Practice in Central America

ECIJA has a team of 50 lawyers in Central America, and offices in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and the Dominican Republic.

Globalization has paved the road for international taxation to gain more relevance for companies everyday.  The principles and regulations that apply in international transactions are dictated primarily by OECD and hence, member countries have been updating their domestic regulations to complement the international provisions.    Moreover, many non-member countries are now trying to follow this trend.

Sensitive to the clients’ needs, ECIJA launches a new area of practice:  International Taxation.  We want to assist our clients in planning and executing its international businesses in accordance to the international standards in place, reducing their adverse effects or taking advantage of their opportunities. That is why ECIJA presents this new practice.

The practice will be led by Jose Enrique Garcia-Romeu, an attorney specialized in International Tax Law with over twenty-five years  experience. He worked for a significant period of time with one of the Big-Four and some of the world’s largest multinationals, leading numerous relevant international transactions, tax planning projects, transfer pricing adjustments and real estate investment projects.

“Companies that carry out international operations and those that are affected by transfer pricing regulations find it especially difficult to operate with a minimum of security in the tax area. They have to comply with regulations of two or more countries simultaneously, and often times this does not suffice because there are also other overlapping regulatory mandates that have to be observed, such as  international “soft law”  and practical issues that need to be addressed too. All this intricate scenario has to be handled amid the  continuous change of business decisions. Only with the assistance  of an expert in the field  it is possible to navigate successfully through so much uncertainty.” Jose Enrique Garcia-Romeu commented.

Mauricio Paris, Managing Partner of ECIJA Central America, asserted: “The demand for international taxation, double taxation and transfer pricing services among our clients has grown exponentially in recent years.  That is why we saw the opportunity to broaden  our tax services offer with a highly sophisticated international component, to attend the demand of the industries that we serve.”
